On 5 October 2026, the day Václav Havel would have turned 90, Pilsen commemorated him at two sites connected to his local history. City representatives laid flowers at a plaque on the wall of Bory prison and at the Václav Havel memorial bench in Šafařík Gardens.
According to the city, Havel was imprisoned in Pilsen-Bory from 30 July 1981 to 28 January 1983. The plaque, designed by local sculptor František Bálek, also records his prisoner number, 2789. The memorial bench in Šafařík Gardens was unveiled in 2014 and comprises two seats joined by a round table, designed by Bořek Šípek. Today’s commemoration is a fresh reason to explore these links while visiting the city; no new exhibition or access change was announced. The cover is a symbolic AI illustration, not a photograph of the actual bench.
